Green Star Buildings v1.1 is now here

The must anticipated Green Star Buildings v1.1 update has been released by the GBCA this week coinciding with Green Building Forums being held around Australia. This update marks a significant refresh of the rating tool, building upon the success of Green Star Buildings v1.0.

Key Changes

Changes have been made across several key areas including:

  • Revised Climate Positive Pathway with a revamped Positive category featuring a new credit structure, all-electric buildings as a minimum expectation and a stepped points approach for energy use and upfront carbon reductions.

  • A new Nature Positive Pathway phasing in from 2028 introducing new requirements for biodiversity net gain and reporting on nature-related impacts.

  • Two new credits centred on circular practices: Design for Circularity and Impacts Disclosure - rewarding circular design strategies, measurement and improvements.

  • Usability improvements to assist architects, consultants and builders including clearer guidance and language throughout.

  • Preparation for regulatory changes in carbon disclosure, circular economy, nature-related disclosures as well as aligning with NCC 2022 and the recently introduced NABERS embodied carbon tool.

  • Alignment with the Australian Sustainable Finance Taxonomy for simpler access to sustainable finance.

Transition Period

There will be a transition period where projects can register under either Buildings v1.0 or v1.1 between now (21 Oct 2025) and 30 April 2026. However, projects must register under the new Buildings v1.1 tool from 1st May 2026.
